News Menu Button Westenra misses out at Classic Brits

Teenage singing sensation Hayley Westenra stirred up a press frenzy at the Classical Brit Awards in London, depsite missing out on the big prizes.

The 17-year-old lost out in the album of the year category to Welshman Bryn Terfel while best female artist went to Cecilia Bartoli.

The double Kiwi nominee didn't take home an award, but she managed to see the bright side.

"I hadn't even worked out a speech anyway so I was saved." Westenra.

But Westenra still shone on the night with a moving performance of Po Kari Kari Ana.

Westenra wasn't the only Kiwi in the spotlight, New Zealand's Geoff Sewell of the world's first opera band, Amici Forever, was also in attendance with his group who performed along with Westenra and award winner Terfel.

Westenra now heads to the United States on a promotinal tour, then it's back to the books for a teenager with exams just around the corner.
