Vodafone NZ Music Awards

Scribe is the new Bic, perhaps no coincidence as they both have pen names. The articulate hip-hop star cleaned out winning seven of his nine nominations and touched the crowd with his sincere, poor-boy-made-good story of his rise to fame and the people who believed in him along the way.

Fashion at the Awards

Unlike the Grammy Awards, the TUIs are not known for their glamour. Scribe’s yellow Timberlands and matching cap were surpassed in naffness only by Fast Crew’s female singer’s outfit of a sparkly blue disco top and heels fronting a hip-hop band. Mikey Havoc arrived in a procession of drag queens in a white faux fur coat and hat designed by WORLD to echo his last appearance in 1992 winning with his rock band, Push Push. Prime Minister Helen Clark mocked his coat as being an albino possum as she opened with the Classical award, very warmly received to my surprise, and looking the best I’ve seen her, in a feminine, shaped black trouser suit.

Co-presenter Jacqui Brown looked stunning in a WORLD pink satin corset dress but is so over-rated; I tried to like her as she’s so cool but she just doesn’t say anything good, funny or interesting. Best dressed musician was Hayley Westenra in a tunic over jeans and hip belt, as she thanked her hairdresser in her speech. “What for; straight mousey brown hair?” snarled the girl behind me.

Celebrity Presenters

Jonah Lomu was a popular presenter back in health after his kidney operation, and joined other All Blacks on stage including Carlos Spencer but disappointingly no Olympic gold medal winners presented. The sports stars were more eloquent but not as pretty as models Nicky Watson and Aja Rock, and Whale Rider actress Keisha Castle Hughes looking sexy and grownup in her strapless top. Newsreaders Carol Hirshfield and John Cambell quipped that they had never seen an audience this big on TV3, before breaking into air guitar moves on stage to the delight of the enamoured crowd.

Performances

Highlights of the awards were performances from Scribe and Blindspott opening the show, and Hayley Westenra’s finale as backing singer to hip-hop and dancers. Elemeno P’s rousing rendition of Verona, then accompanying jazz winners The Rodger Fox Big Band, was another great fusion number.

Bad Manners

The crowd around me, bar the pretty girls from TV Guide, was so rude I had to shift seats; shouting out offensive remarks mocking everyone on stage. Intolerance for different religious beliefs is a bit off really. The chubby prom dress-wearing teen in front of me yelling out ‘Get some clothes on’ to Aja Rock knows who she is.

The After Party

The Export Gold girls and guys in underwear and bodypaint were very popular, as naked people bearing free alcohol at a party often are. After an over-long show of 3 hours, the party was packed enjoying the live DJs and limited range but copious amounts of sponsor’s product. I did find a cocktail but it seemed to be vodka and cough syrup, must be a new formula (44?) At least I don’t have a sore throat this morning.
